Theme Lead DCS: Peter Duxbury, Lincolshire

The JRIEP Safeguarding aim is to maintain robust procedures for safeguarding children and young people and three main areas of activity are being developed to support this aim:

  • Assured safeguarding materials
  • Reflective casework practice
  • Family approaches to safeguarding

1. Assured safeguarding

Three sets of guidance materials are being developed that pose personal questions for leaders to ask themselves in order to identify whether the work of their organisation keeps as many children and young people as safe as possible. The question themes include:

  • Leadership/accountability
  • Performance management
  • Casework/reviews
  • Integration (including partnership)
  • Workforce
  • Prevention (including early identification)

The guidance materials are being developed for three key sets of leaders:

The Assured Safeguarding materials illustrate some ways in which leaders around the East Midlands answer the questions for themselves. The guidance does not seek to describe organisational frameworks and processes but will highlight individual actions, behaviours and routines that effective leaders adopt.

2. Developing a culture of relfective safeguarding

From autumn 2011, the regional group of 2nd Tier Safeguarding Leads are working together through a priority project to extend work across the region to support this theme. The actions are being supported by Professor Eileen Munro and will include a programme of peer review through Unannounced Safeguarding Assurance Visits.
