Theme Lead DCS: Carol Chambers, Rutland
The overall aim of this theme is to improve life chances and reduce poverty and service-dependency for families in the region. This is clearly an over-arching aim and a manageable number of contributory objectives have been identified for the forthcoming period:
- To provide support for all local areas in their Child Poverty work moving through Needs Assessment to Strategy
- To improve the availability and use of child and family health data
- To strengthen the regional drive to tackle levels of childhood obesity through co-ordinated support of Children's Trusts
Child Poverty
The initial need to access data at the appropriate level has been addressed during 2010 both regionally and nationally. Data is now readily available (see Oct 8th regional seminar) and the challenge being tackled now is to make intelligent use of data in the development of child poverty strategies. A regional support group has been created to support this phase - see Regional Networks page.
Tackling Obesity
a) A rapid research review was commissioned to provide an anthology of effective whole system approaches to combating childhood obesity and investigate the value for money - cost effectiveness of different approaches. This is freely available and can be downloaded from this link
b) An additional project is being undertaken in the region by LGID (Local Government Improvement and Development) with two local areas to identify and develop leadership role descriptors for the range of Children's Trust partners that can underpin a more effective multi-agency approach to tackling obesity in a co-ordinated manner.
Child Health Data
General health and Child Health Profiles have now been made available through EMPHO at both district and local authority areas. These can be accessed through an interactive tool on the ChiMat website.
